The Importance Of Well Water Testing

Clean, pure water is necessary for survival. It's a fundamental building block of life. People who live in urban areas have the security in knowing that the water delivered to their taps is frequently tested and measures taken to insure safety. What about the millions of people in rural areas who must rely on wells for their water? What safeguards are in place for their protection? They must rely on well water testing. There are no safeguards provided by the local government for private wells. It is the responsibility of the well owner to insure that the water entering his home is safe to drink.
There are many things that can contaminate wells; some of them are naturally occurring and some are not. Water can become contaminated by radon, arsenic, pesticides, herbicides and human and animal manure. These contaminants and bacteria are capable of causing gastrointestinal illness and neurological problems. Infants, small children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with immune deficiencies are most at risk.

The simple solution to guarantee that well water is safe is to commit to annual well water testing.Testing the well is a simple process that any homeowner is capable of doing. The local health department is the best source of information on who to call for the bottles and testing instructions. The test is relatively inexpensive, usually less than $50. The WGI (Water Quality Indicator) test will detect the presence and amount of the most common germs and contaminants.

When the water sample is collected, it is sent to a laboratory for analysis, and a report is mailed back to the well owner. The report lists what was tested for, the levels, and if there is any cause for concern. If well water testing shows there are concerns that the water is unsafe, there are a couple of ways the problem is treated. The measure taken depends on the type and level of contamination.

Disinfecting the well may be necessary. Filtering and treating the water is another way. There are two ways to treat the water itself. First, is point of use treatment. Water is treated in batches at a dedicated tap. The other way is point of entry treatment. This second way treats all the water entering the home. Both ways remove contaminants from the water, making it safe to drink. It is very important to insure that water is safe to drink and bathe in for all household members. Annual well water testing and following the recommendations contained in the analysis is the best way to keep everybody healthy.

Oil seems to be on every bodies mind a lot lately both in the good sense and the bad sense, but regardless of what one thinks of the oil industry it is the #1 most efficient energy source in the world. And if we didn't have it we would still be on horse and buggies or riding a bicycle to and from work. The oil industry has always had a mystical aura about it in the fact that it just appears out of the ground and the thoughts of Jed shooting at the ground in the Beverly Hillbillies and...

Organic Gardening in the San Diego Region

By Lee Bell
Mild winters and hot summers make it possible for San Diego residents to garden year round. Organic gardening is especially advantageous to this ocean side community that is nestled between the beautiful shore and the mountains. Soil condition in San Diego can be a factor. Those in the higher elevations may find many rocks, and most people will need to water their gardens frequently to prevent soil from drying out.

How to Make PCB at Home Using a Laser Printer (AKA the Toner Transfer Method)

By Dafne Vini
As an enthusiastic electronics hobby fan I was always fascinated by the fact that it is actually possible to make an almost professional looking Printed Circuit Board (PCB) at home. My eager for producing my PCB's at home rather than using the good old wire-wrap prototyping method gets even stronger as the years goes by and the availability of through hole packages (for modern devices) is getting lower and lower.
