Water Well Problems - What Are They And How To Fix Them

A water well can be an efficient source of water for many communities, especially if a water well is dug from an area where there is steady supply of water.  However, if the water well is not well-designed or well-maintained, users are bound to face water well problems.
Water well problems are not something to be ignored or underestimated. If it is not taken care of right away, waterwell problems can worsen and disrupt the supply of water provided for your family. The drinking water could also become dangerous for the health of the people using it. Problems regarding the well well must be solved right away. Here are some of the common water well problems and the corresponding solutions to them.

Water Well Filtration problems

Poor filtration system is one of the common problems to face when using a water well. The water drawn from a well typically contains high amounts of minerals like calcium or magnesium salts. Before water is filtered from minerals, it is called hard water. Hard water is not advisable for drinking. As hard water passes through a duct, it leaves mineral deposits called scale or scum. When the scale buildup increases, the water channels are in higher risk of being clogged.

Inspect the water well for any signs of scale formation. Once you confirm that there is a buildup, hire a water treatment specialist to do a thorough examination of the well and free the area from any signs of buildup.

Decreased amount of water yielded

A decline in the amount of water pumped is often caused by a poorly designed pump system. It does not necessarily mean that there is an insufficient supply of water in the well. The pump system could either be worn out or leaking. If this is the case, you would need to find plumbing services from a specialist who can repair or replace the wells pump system.

Changes in well water quality

If you notice that the water from the well is beginning to give off an unpleasant odor, it could mean that the water is severely contaminated by man-made chemicals from nearby industrial establishments. Water well problems affecting the quality of the water needs to be solved right away to minimize the health risks brought about by contaminated water.

If the odor is something similar to a rotten egg, the problem could be caused by dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. This is a sign that bacteria has severely contaminated the well water. The solution for this is to conduct a shock chlorination treatment. Shock chlorination is a water well-maintenance process to kill the bacteria inside the well.

Contamination of chemicals will also affect the color and taste of the water. Observe if there is any change or have a sample of the water inspected by a testing facility. Users must ensure that the water is safe for drinking before making the water well accessible. If it is found that the water is contaminated by gas and other chemicals and organic matter coming from neighboring farms and factories, the water well needs to be disinfected and the devices inside the well must be repaired by a water well specialist. The amount of water pumped inside the well must also be reduced.

Collapse of the water wells parts

If a water well is old and overused, the well casing and well screen becomes more prone to damage. The well has to be reconditioned by a licensed drilling contractor. Solutions for water well problems such as this can be very costly especially if the damage is too severe. If however the damage is only small, there are more comprehensive well maintenance procedures you can find over the internet. Well maintenance is very important to ensure that the water being drawn from the well is abundant and safe for drinking.

Geothermal Power on the Rise

By Euan Blauvelt
Geothermal power generation capacity worldwide rose from 7,972.7 MW in 2000 to 8,933 MW in 2005, with 8,035 MW running. This is about 0.2% of the total world installed power generating capacity.

How to Rescue the Gulf - The Next Time

By Klaus H Hemsath
BP's leaking oil well will spill more than five million barrels into the Gulf of Mexico. A well designed collection dome could have stopped the leak within days. One week's spill could have been mopped up with two advanced oil skimmers, if each vessel had been capable of collecting more than five thousand barrels per day. Neither the oil industry nor the U.S. Coast Guard was prepared for dealing with a well failure in deep waters.

The Wood Work Bench - The Old But Effective Standard in Work Benches

By Greg Parsons
Today, there are many materials that can be used to build work benches-steel, aluminum, melamine, synthetic wood-but a wood work bench is still the best thing for heavy-duty work. Work benches made of melamine and synthetic wood may be cheap and easy to carry around different work areas, but they cannot match the toughness and durability of wood work benches.
