DIY Water Well Drilling: Clean Water For A Clean Conscience

As homeowners and prospective home builders consider the environment and costs, one area worthy of exploration is water usage. DIY water well drilling is a money-saving venture in more ways than one. First, it's cheaper than hiring a contractor to drill the well, and second, the endeavor pays for itself with savings on water bills. Drilling your own well taps you into the earth's natural supply of fresh water, delivered right to your land courtesy of Mother Nature. It can be used for drinking, cleaning, recreation, and gardening. The water will be chemical-free, having been filtered naturally.
Drilling for a well requires equipment capable of penetrating the earth at least 50-200 feet below ground. In the past, wells were dug by hand. This is difficult, unsafe and no longer necessary. The portable equipment needed for a diy water well drilling project can be purchased or rented. Heavy-duty rig packages include strong engines with the horsepower you'll need to get through the multiples layers of sand, gravel, rock and clay you may find on your way down to a pure water supply with sufficient pressure. The rig will include industrial strength drill stems and bits, commercial grade high-pressure pumps, and pressure hose assembly, all for $5,000 on average.

Reliable equipment for diy water well drilling will include step-by-step instructions suitable for novices to operate. You may need to check with your city department to find a safe spot to drill, staying clear of septic systems and sewer lines, underground cables, and avoiding areas prone to flooding so that the well water maintains purity. It shouldn't be difficult to find a workable area to drill, as must private water wells are a mere 6"-8" in diameter.

The process begins with a drill bit attached to a drill pipe, the bit is lowered into the ground, and earth and rock are broken up. The drill pipe pumps separated pieces up and out of the well with drilling fluid, keeping the drill bit cool in the process. Some areas with harder rock use compressed air rather than fluid. The breaking apart and pumping of earth is continued until clear water is reached.

Clear water should be naturally filtered and safe to use, but testing the water will eliminate fear of bacteria or contamination due to fertilizers, sewage, and refuse. You don't have to be a slave to high water bills. Thousands of homeowners initiate diy water well drilling projects every week. Over half of the drinking water in America is supplied by wells.
